In 2013 a discussion group called PRIVACY AND INTIMACY was initiated, within the international Vostok Forum, in Murmansk, Russia. The video work of the same name is based on the audio records of this discussion group. The general subject of the work is, therefore, privacy and intimacy and how those two concepts are lived in the contemporary society.

The video itself is a white screen where some of the chosen audio records are typed, with a different colour for each person to make it appear as if the discussion happened in a virtual way. This virtuality of the typed text is of course connected to this idea of privacy within the immaterial Internet sphere, especially in the social media. In the video, one of the speakers questions the data privacy of the users of a gay chat application: is a private chat still private when the collected data belongs to the owners of the application itself? But then, isn’t privacy ‘just another illusion’?

This is an ongoing project and will be part of the Van der Helst Plein Video Biennale 2017 in Amsterdam, curated by Anja Sijben. The work is produced with the support of Mondriaan Fund.
