Pica is characterised by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive, such as clay, chalk, dirt, sand, ash, coal, wood, paper, stones, soap, paint, rubber, glass, etc. In the modern medicine, pica is officially recognised as a mental disorder. At the same time, it can also be a cultural practice not associated with a deficiency or disorder. Pica is a common phenomenon in our society, which is commonly overlooked.
